Decision dashboards: Start with the question, not the numbers
When a team knows which decision it must make, it can select information that actually matters.
Start with a decision question: which work is stuck, which customer group needs attention, or which objective is becoming at risk. Select only the information that helps answer that question so the dashboard does not become a container for every number.
Give each metric or status an owner and a shared meaning. If “done” or “at risk” means something different to each person, more data will not make decisions easier.
Set a rhythm when the team opens the dashboard to decide, not only to report what already happened. Information without a decision moment often becomes a maintenance burden.
